EA signs multi-year deal with Disney for Star Wars license
EA has signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Disney for the exclusive rights to develop Star Wars games, according to Games Industry International.
The terms allow EA to create games “across the most popular gaming genres and platforms”, while Disney will still have rights to make Star Wars games for social, mobile and online platforms. EA did not announce any titles but did confirm that it has three studios ready to work on Star Wars projects including BioWare, DICE and Visceral Games. According to the publisher, the games will be based on the film series but will feature new stories and gameplay.
That someone would quickly nab the rights should be of no surprise, given that Disney shut down LucasArts last month, which of course held the Star Wars license until Disney bought out LucasFilm last October for $4.05 billion.
No details were given about the length of the contract or financial terms.
