The rumors had been swirling for months and had recently been backed up by leaks and teasers, but today, Samsung Electronics officially revealed the Galaxy S4 – the company’s brand new flagship phone.

At their unveiling press conference in New York City, Samsung showed off its new baby to the delight of those in the tech and mobile industry, as the new smartphone packs quite a punch and will surely put current smartphones to shame, though the HTC One may beg to differ.

So let’s get down to the nitty gritty. The S4 packs a full HD Super AMOLED 5″ screen that pushes out 441ppi (PenTile screen btw), which is higher than the iPhone 5, but slightly less than the HTC One. Samsung managed to increase the screen size, while keeping the housing minimal at 7.9mm thick and weighing only 130g. The screen will also make use of the newer Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for added durability. However, the case itself is still plastic, as found on the Galaxy S3 and Note II.

Next up is the camera. Samsung added a 13-megapixel rear camera, while the front-facing camera is 2-megapixels, with a new Dual Camera function being added to the mix. This feature allows for the simultaneous use of both front and rear cameras, which will let users blend the two images, with the smaller one inside the large one. There will be a variety of frame effects to make this possible, with 8 ways to combine the photos together. A Dual Video Call function will also allow for use of both cameras when making video calls. Without having to switch camera views, you can have the other caller see from both cameras.

Looking at photos can take advantage of the Story Album function which sorts out photos according to specific events, geo-tagging or timeline.

The Galaxy S4 will come with either a 1.9GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor or a 1.6 Exynos octa-core processor, depending on which region it’s in. The S4 will run on Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) and include various Samsung features like ‘Air View’, which you can see now on the Galaxy Note II with the S-Pen (on the S4, you use your finger), Air Gesture, for making gestures without touching the screen, Samsung Smart Pause, Samsung Smart Scroll and S Voice Drive, for voice commands that are optimized for driving.

Connection-wise, the S4 supports HSPA+42 Mbps and 4G LTE, with the LTE version supporting up to 6 bandwidths, while also supporting WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac. Internal storage will include 16, 32 and 64GB versions, with a microSD slot being present again for up to 64GB of additional memory. The S4 features 2GB of RAM and houses a 2,600 mAh battery. Samsung also confirmed that the S4 would support wireless charging.

The Galaxy S4 will be available in April for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, as well as US Cellular and Cricket. In Europe, Samsung GALAXY S 4 is partnering with global mobile operators such as Deutsche Telecom, EE, H3G, Orange, Telenor, Telia Sonera, Telefonica, and Vodafone.

How much will it cost you ask? Samsung would not discuss the price point but promised to announce it in the coming weeks.
