Bioshock Infinites Cover Debacle

The Bioshock Infinite cover debacle has taught me a few things.

  • Ken Levine is a cool dude for trying to rectify a situation in a very creative and user incorporated way instead of just ignoring them like most companies.
  • People will whine about anything.

I have seen the alternate covers. Not only do only 2 of them work (as the rest are just either too weird to be a cover of plain uglier than what was picked to begin with) but I’d like to tackle the even bigger question I have here, which has got to be…who spends their time looking at the cover art of boxes? Honestly, who-outside of the day i purchase-takes the game off the shelf every day and instead of playing it looks at the cover for fun? Let’s be honest, guys. We don’t look at the covers. We don’t spend our time staring at them. We look at it once when we buy it, and sometimes when we take it off the shelf to play it, but never again. So what exactly is the deal here? I’ve heard the claims that it’s too generic a cover and it won’t help their sales, but in actuality if people bought games based off their cover art, nobody would’ve ever played Mass Effect 2 because that game has the WORST COVER ART KNOWN TO MAN. Not to mention that on top of that, I’ve also heard the theory that an ugly cover will detract from game sales. Shouldn’t the fact that this is the 3rd game in the franchise (and really the 2nd in the Levine franchise if you wish to get technical) be enough to say that they’re doing fine, sale wise? I an another article I am writing about that, but I’ll leave it at this for now.

It seems to me that lately, the majority of gamers like to attack and ridicule anything other gamers like that they don’t. My favorite right now are these hypocrites who call FPS games “repetitive”, then buy the new Mario game that’s exactly like the last 80 Mario games. Why is it so hard for you to just play the games you like and allow others to play the games they like? Mario is fun and shooters are fun, and I don’t care which you choose to play as long as you’re having a good time. What exactly do you GAIN from attacking other peoples interests? If it’s a self esteem boost, then you might just have bigger problems than I can help you with right now. Recently, a friend of mine picked up something from Gamestop and on the cover of the box it said “Pre-order bonus from Gamestop.” We both agreed that we didn’t approve of this, but for different reasons. He didn’t like it because it interfered with the artwork (and once again, I don’t understand who just spends their time looking at cases instead of playing games, but to each their own I suppose) and I didn’t like it because it was a conglomerate company forcing themselves on someone else’s product. It was Gamestops way of saying, “Screw you, WE own this now.”

He didn’t like it because he wanted the cover art unobstructed.

That last part was a big of a tangent, I’ll grant you that, but my point is this. A game is going to be bought because of reviews, or hype or interest. NOT because of the cover art. Most people-if they’re looking at anything on the box-are looking at the back summary before they decide on a purchase. I go to Gamestop to pick up boxes fro games I buy that don’t come with their original boxes, but I don’t do it because I enjoy looking at the cover art, I do it because I am anal and OCD about everything on my shelf matching. Expectation is what ruins a product. NOT the product itself. At least 97% of the time. You go into something expecting it to be incredible, you’re often the reason that you hate it when it lets you down. Very rarely is it because the product itself is bad, although that does happen too sometimes.

And more than that, just…stop whining. Please. I’m sick of this self entitlement that a lot of gamers seem to feel they are owed now. Thank you.
