Activision has announced a new entry in its Skylanders franchise: Skylanders Swap Force, which will be coming out later this fall.

Set to be demonstrated during Toy Fair 2013 in New York City next week, Swap Force will give gamers the ability to swap aboth the top and bottom halves of their toys to create new characters. The game will allow the reconfiguration of 16 Swap Force characters, which results in over 250 combinations; matching powers and moves, while also allowing the use of the entire collection (Skylanders, Skylanders Giants), but now with the ability to jump.

“With Skylanders, we didn’t just create a beloved new franchise, we actually created an entirely new category that brings the world of physical toys and video games together like never before. And now with Skylanders SWAP Force, we are pushing the genre we created forward with another big innovation: customization,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. “The idea that kids can customize their own characters in the physical world, and have their unique combinations recognized in the virtual world, is an idea as big as the concept of bringing toys to life itself.”

The new game takes place in Cloudbreak Islands, home to a mystical volcano that erupts every hundred years to replenish the magic in Skylands.  According to the publisher, a group of Skylanders got caught in the volcano’s eruptions which set them to Earth, blasted apart.  They will become a special team known as Swap Force, for their abilities to swap halves, as they look to battle Kaos.

Skylanders Swap Force will feature 16 new Swap Force characters and 32 core Skylanders characters along with 8 new LightCore characters.

Expect the game to be released on all current platforms.  Now enjoy this teaser trailer:
