Since the debut of the Piston at E3, Gabe Newell has been on the interview circuit building up hype for the new machine. In a recent interview with Verve , Newell described a vision of three tiers for the Steambox. Newell described 3 configurations dubbed good, better, best. The most basic model is envisioned as a $99 model, an intermediate model at $300, and an advanced model that would be customizable based on how much money a consumer is willing to put into it.
The big question to me is whether there will be an uniformity among these models. One of the key advantages of console gaming is that console gamers don’t have to worry about whether their device will run a particular game. It seems unlikely that a $100 Steambox will be able to play the same games as a customized $1000 Steambox.
