For those of you (like me) who have already picked up a Wii U the day-one patch/update was an unwelcome surprise. Luckily I already knew about the almost one hour set up patch when I plugged my machine in because as we learned the hard way, not practicing patience and unplugging the console during the patch would likely result in the entire unit bricking.

According to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime a firmware update won’t be built into the Wii U console until early 2013, which means that every Wii U opened on Christmas morning will require the lengthy set up patch — nothing kids love more than opening their brand new console from Santa and then sitting and watching an update bar for an hour.
