Sony’s media juggernaut, the PS3 has become the top platform in the world when it comes to watching Netflix, and to top that off, it is also the leading device when it comes to developing for the media streaming service.
In a statement released earlier today, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said “PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our No. 1 platform overall”. PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our No. 1 platform overall.
Another CEO giddy with excitement about this news is SCEA CEO, Jack Tretton who said “The PlayStation and Netflix communities both share a strong passion for high quality entertainment”.Netflix provides a fantastic experience for watching TV shows and movies on PS3, and our joint development will continue to produce innovations for our customers that further demonstrate PS3 as the true home for entertainment in the living room.”
With over 30 million active members, Netflix is the worlds leading internet subscription based service, so this is quite the accolade for the PS3 and the teams behind it. The PS3 was the first device to offer full 1080p video streaming and full 5.1 surround sound. The PS3 is also be the first device to get a set of new voice activated control features, which has been named ‘Max’. There is no doubt that Netflix is putting a lot of its eggs into the PS3’s basket when it comes to its service, and one just has to wonder if other devices such as the Xbox 360 will get some of this love from Reed Hastings, and Netflix too.
