Xbox Surface: Could Microsoft Be Preparing to Enter the 7-Inch Tablet Market?
According to reports coming from those with close ties to the Redmond, WA based company, Microsoft is planning to release a 7-inch tablet called the Xbox Surface. The tablet will be Microsoft’s entry into the ultra-competitive 7-inch tablet market, and if they do indeed release an Xbox branded tablet, it could shake up the mobile gaming world.
The Xbox Surface will likely be based on the same ARM processors and high bandwidth RAM that the Surface RT is based on, but there are some other rumors floating around that state that Microsoft could look to use an unannounced Intel SoC. The new tablet will reportedly run a custom version of Windows, which will use a different kernel than the Surface RT and Windows 8 based devices. While the tablet’s software will reportedly look similar to Windows RT, the main focus of the tablet will be on gaming.
Microsoft has become very good at creating new devices on the quiet, but part of the Redmond HQ has apparently been put on lock-down while testing is taking place with the initial hardware that Microsoft has got its hands on. If Microsoft does indeed release a 7-inch gaming tablet, the mobile gaming world could be turned on its head, but it remains to be seen if MS will keep moving forward with this plan, or switch over to one that involves making a standard 7-in Windows RT tablet. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
