As we near November 18, AKA “WiiUpalooza,” one of the sure-fire hot sellers in the launch window is New Super Mario Bros. U. And a few short weeks before its release, Nintendo is revealing a few secrets about what to expect, and a new character that players can’t wait to catch up with.
The map screen will be less like Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii and more like Super Mario World – it will be one continuous screen with multiple paths to get around.
There will also be two new modes introduced in NSMBU. Challenge Mode, an objective-based mode, breaks down into “Time Attack,” “Coin Collection,” “1-Up Rally,” and “Special.” The goal is simple: meet the challenge, beat the level. Challenge Mode is designed for two players, one each on the Wii Remote and Wii U Gamepad.
Coin Battle also presents a simple goal: lots of coins for five players; get more than the others. The player on the Wii U Gamepad can place Boost Blocks to help or hinder other players. The Gamepad can also be used as a Coin Battle level editor.
But of most note is the introduction of Nabbit, the little, semi-creepy rabbit-looking character above. Nabbit will show up in his own Nabbit stagest, like the Hammer Bros. stages in SMB3. Nabbit has a prize in his sack of goodies, and if players can catch the speed demon, they can win the prize, including the rare P-Acorn, which, like the P-Wing in SMB3, allows for unlimited flight in one level.
New Super Mario Bros. U will launch on the day of WiiUpalooza, November 18.
