New Modes, Features Revealed for New Super Mario Bros. U
Nintendo today lifted up the curtain on a few features and game modes for New Super Mario Bros. U, which is set for a Nov. 18 release, right alongside the launch of the Wii U.
For one, Nintendo acknowledged what many had previously reported one, which was the use of a World Map, which hasn’t been used since Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo. According to the company, the map will contain various secret exits, which will alter the map’s routes and shortcuts. All of the game’s worlds are interconnected so you’re not limited to playing the game in a linear fashion.
Gamers will also come across a creature named Nabbit, who will appear around the map. If you manage to catch up to him and take back the items he stole from Toad, you will receive the P-Acorn, which lets you fly around continuously through an entire level. This will be the only way to get the item.
As for modes, Nintendo revealed the Challenge Mode, which has players completing specific objectives in any given level. There will be four single-player categories: Time Attack, Coin Collection, 1-Up Rally and Special (random challenges). There will also be Boost Mode Challenges, which are for two-players; one player using the Gamepad, while the other uses the Wii Remote.
Lastly, the game will include Coin Battle, where up to five players can play together and compete to see who can collect the most coins. Four players will use Wii Remotes while the fifth player will use the Gamepad. This mode has already been shown off plenty of times during demos of the game.
