I’ve had the opportunity to test out SOL REPUBLIC’s line of headphones, whether it’s their in-ear buds, or the over-the-ear headphones.
When I first tested out the Tracks V8 headphones, I was pleasantly surprised with how good they sounded, especially considering their $129 price tag. They had punchy bass and an abundance of mids and highs. Shortly thereafter, the company showed off their Tracks HDs, which added their V10 Sound Engines and a fancier headband and brushed aluminum head cans. Needless to say, they have been my favorite headphones for months.
Now, SOL Republic has introduced their $179 premium Tracks Ultra headphones, which come with the V12 Sound Engines. At first glance, you’ll notice their cool white SonicSoft speaker pads that add noise isolation, while the cans and headband have a navy blue design. While the color scheme may not be for everyone (and you can always swap out headbands of other colors, along with the audio cables), I really dig it. It’s both fancy and stylish, so right up my alley.
Testing out the Tracks Ultra with music ranging from pop, rock, rap, hip hop and dance; I noticed that they too have deep, but not over-the-top bass. I’d say they were slightly better than the V10s, but not by much. However, where I noticed the biggest difference was in the vocal clarity and wider soundstage, giving off a feeling that you’re in a larger, more wide-open area.
As with the previous models, the Ultras do have a three-button remote and in-line mic that picked up my voice quite well when making phone calls, while the FlexTech Sound Track headband, is just as indestructible as the Tracks and Tracks HD.
While I became used to getting significantly more bass out of each iteration of Tracks headphones, I was more impressed by the clarity this time around, regardless of music choice or audio device.
Coming in at $179.99, the Tracks Ultras may be a tougher sell if only because the $129 HDs sound pretty damn good in their own right, but if you’ve got a little extra cash laying around, the Tracks Ultras sound fantastic and look sexy to boot.
