Bethesda Executive Says Current Gen Consoles Are Not the Problem
Bethesda’s PR and marketing Vice President Peter Hines recently told Official Xbox Magazine UK he feels there is still much that can still be done with the current generation of consoles.
“There is still plenty that we are able to do visually, technically and from a story-telling standpoint.
Bethesda recently made it clear they had job openings for future console games. However as they prepare for what comes next, Hines understands there will be a few issues with going to next generation too quickly.
“For me the problems with new consoles are two-fold. The developers are trying to hit a moving technical target, because the platforms are being built. A new console doesn’t just show up a year before launch and is exactly what it will be when it comes out. It moves and iterates along the way. And introducing something like that to games that are in development is always a bit tricky. And that is obviously an element of risk.
“The second point is that your install base always starts at zero,” he went on. “Then it comes out and suddenly a certain number of people buy it but it won’t be the same number as the current gen. So you have divided your audience.
Hines says he is excited about the possibilities of next-gen but he is worried about the current install base. There is always an uncertainty of losing gamers to the higher cost and advancements of the new consoles. Will there be a price to pay for next-gen? Gamers and consumers certainly have the potential to be the deciding factor with that.
