Madden NFL 13, FIFA 13 Coming to Wii U

When the Wii U debuted at E3 2011, it was announced that the console would be the birthplace of a beautiful partnership between EA and Nintendo. After that, radio silence was the only noise exuding from the two powerful publishers. Outside of Mass Effect 3, support from EA for the new console seemed nonexistent at E3 2012 to the point that many questioned whether or not either side cared to recall their declared allegiance from the previous year; however, official word released today by the third-party publisher indicates that all is well as both Madden NFL 13 and FIFA 13, this year’s entries into the two best selling sports franchises, are in development for the Wii U.

Thanks to the improved power of the console, Wii U versions of the two games will feature the same high-definition graphics that have long separated sports games on current-generation systems from those on the original Wii. In addition, each game plans to utilize the platform’s unique controller, the GamePad, for modes not capable of being done anywhere else.

In FIFA 13, a new cooperative mode will allow for five players to join together with one taking control as manager and four others taking care of the on-the-field action. Team Management Mode is a feature that will use the GamePad’s screen to depict an interactive radar with which users can set up plays, attacking or defending supporting runs, alter formations, make substitutions, and generally take control of the sport’s most strategic elements. Uses of the console’s innovative controller continue from there in Manage Match, an option that puts one in the management position of their favorite team where they can direct players and inspire them with half-time discussions.

Changes made to Madden NFL 13 aren’t so ambitious as to inspire their own modes, but they do dramatically streamline the process of playing any given football game in the franchise’s annual update. With the Wii U GamePad, players can pick plays, make adjustments before the snap, and manager personnel all using the device’s touch screen.

Madden NFL 13 will launch for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, and Wii on August 28 with FIFA 13 following close behind for every platform on September 25. A release date for the games has not been given for the Wii U, but, that said, the Wii U itself is a console without a release date.
