What’s up everyone, welcome to our latest column, “Gaming’s WTF Moments”, which will highlight, not just bonehead, head-scratching moments, but from time to time, those that made us say ‘WTF’ in a good way.
In this first edition, we can’t help but talk about one of the biggest ‘WTF’ moments in E3 history, when back in 2007, a drunk and extremely incoherent Jamie Kennedy stumbled and mumbled his way through Activision’s press conference. To this day, I still chuckle when I think about his “performance”, or lack thereof, which resulted in jeers, heckles and universal disgust for his presence at the show.
You want jokes? I got jokes!
To recap, Jamie Kennedy was brought in as the host for Activision’s E3 2007 presser, which is all fine and dandy considering that publishers, to this day, continue to use celebrities for their annual media briefings. However, only moments into the start of the conference, it was clear as day that there was something wrong with Kennedy. Now I know what you’re thinking: “Isn’t there always something wrong with that guy?” Well yes I suppose so, though props for dating Jennifer Love Hewitt (I hate you!).
But no seriously, Kennedy was obviously on something, or at the least pretty drunk. As he fumbled his way through interviews for Tony Hawk Proving Ground and Call of Duty, you knew he should’ve called in sick. Cracking bad dick jokes with Tony Hawk and the Neversoft team were bad enough, but it only made it worse when he laughed at his own jokes and quasi heckled the crowd for not laughing with him.
Here are some of Kennedy’s worst jokes:
- “I just wanna say that this place is the only place that makes the guys at Comic-Con look like Ocean’s 13.”
- “So I wanna ask you about the name of your company, Neversoft…it’s weird…is it a bunch of programmers walking around with hard-ons?”
- “The game is called “Friend or Foe”…like Foe what? Foe sheezy?”
In fact, take a moment to watch these highlights for yourselves:
Some folks will argue that Mr. Caffeine’s presence at the 2011 E3 press conference for Ubisoft was pretty damn bad, and believe me, he was, but after getting called out on Twitter a few months ago for being the worst E3 host of all time, Kennedy responded with: “wow u dorks can’t let that go, You have no idea what really happened, because your [sic] not in the biz, ur a spectator.”
Sure, Jamie, sure.
Needless to say, Jamie hasn’t been called back to the annual show since then and we don’t expect he’ll want to show his face there either. But hey, stranger things have happened.
