The 2012 E3 Epic Win Awards (Part 4)

Part 4 of the Epic Win Awards is here just in time for your July 4th holiday week! What better way is there to unwind after barbecues, pool parties and blowing up fireworks than a little video game action?

E3 had a lot in the way of great gaming and big reveals, and as we’ve seen, a healthy dose of intrigue and surprise as well. But it’s nice to know that some things in this crazy mixed-up world we live in never change. The sun will always shine, the water will always be wet, and when the Super Mario Bros team releases a new title, you can rest assured that it will be a smash hit, a title full of solid platforming and challenging levels, fun for the whole family.

Best Platforming Game of E3 2012

And the Epic Win belongs to… Rayman Legends.

Wait, what?

Run that one by me again?

But… both New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Mario Bros. 2 were both released at E3! You’re saying… wait, what? I’m confused!

The consensus around the office is what I have to deal with though, and certain staffers may have tipped the scale in Rayman Legends favor, saying that it did what the NSMB titles did, but made better use of the Wii U Gamepad while incorporating sidekick Murfy into gameplay.

Epic Win (Epic upset…) for Rayman Legends. But I’m coming for you, Rayman. Mister Dark is not the only one you need to watch out for anymore.

Best Music/Dance Game of E3 2012

And the Epic Win belongs to… Rock Band Blitz.

Apparently those who said the Rock Band games were just a gimmick for overpriced peripherals were just “hatin’,” as the kids say these days. At its core, Rock Band games are good games, with good mechanics. Rock Band Blitz, departing from musical authenticity to a faster-paced rhythm game, is still a fun game. It’s easy for anyone to pick up and play, and easy to take around and drop in with friends without lugging around a bunch of fake instruments. Plus, any tracks you have for Rock Band 3 can be converted over to Rock Band Blitz. Money saving in video games? How novel. Epic Win for Rock Band Blitz. Good night, GotGame, keep on ROCKIN’!

Best FPS of E3 2012

And the Epic Win belongs to… Halo 4.

Wait, did we just watch a movie or see gameplay? Epically Epic Win for Halo 4, continuing the tradition of demanding storyline with their explosions.

Best Fighting Game of E3 2012

And the Epic Win belongs to… PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

What’s better than a varied cast of characters brawling on a massive collection of dynamic stages?

A varied cast of characters from a wide variety of mostly-unrelated games brawling on a massive collection of dynamic stages.

This is what Sony has cooked up with PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Yes, it could probably be shortened to Super Sony Bros but can forgive this title for lack of originality. Looking at the gameplay, the characters, the stages, we can’t help but to fall instantly in love with the title, and with E3 featuring hot fighting titles like Street Fighter v. Tekken, Dead or Alive 5, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2, for the mash-up coming out on top, you know you have an Epic Win for PSASBR.

Best Action Game of E3 2012

And the Epic Win belongs to… Assassin’s Creed 3.

There were a lot of great action games on the floor this year. From Dishonored to Devil May Cry, there is a lot for action gamers to look forward to.

But Assassin’s Creed 3… just… wow. I instantly fell into the game world even from the first playable scenes of walking through snow. The attention to detail is remarkable… as you watch Connor Kenway troop through, you hear every foot crush, you see tracks. If you turn around, you still see tracks. Stand long enough, and the level of snow will rise. The minutia is fascinating to watch.

Then of course, you have all the aspects of stealth, intrigue, and ruthlessness found in the other games in the series. Mix in historical figures such as George Washington, Paul Revere, and Samuel Adams, shake well, and Assassin’s Creed 3 is sure to be one of the hottest gaming cocktails out on the market for the holiday. Epic Win for AC3.

The most Epic Epic Wins will come in Part 5, where we announce the big 3… Platform, Title, and Publisher Full of Win! Stay tuned, the end is near!

I had a great time playing Rayman Legends as well as Rock Band Blitz. Both games really caught me by surprise in the sense that I enjoyed them a lot more than I expected.
