Nintendo Download Update (May 3)

In American society, it is tradition to refer to something that is a favorable combination as being like peanut butter and chocolate. Upon receiving this week’s Nintendo Download, I’ve come up with a way of referring to that which is unfavorable: like birds and an amoeba.

Indeed, the latest edition of the Nintendo Download presents an odd combination of flavors sure to satisfy your virtual dollar. Bird Mania 3D (Nintendo 3DS) tasks players with commandeering a bird on its trip to Africa, a dangerous voyage in which one must fly, dash, soar, glide, collect, dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge. Amoebattle (3DS/DSi), on the other hand, is a title content to remain within the confines of its microscopic world as the user must align with similarly single-celled organisms in a battle to fight off an encroaching infection.

For those that, for whatever reason, don’t find themselves enchanted with the idea of controlling either a bird or amoeba, the third option exists in the form of Super Hang-On (Wii) for the Virtual Console. Super Hang-On is an arcade title by SEGA that offers players the much more conventional challenge of maneuvering a motorcycle through a series of difficult races. Then again, Super Hang-On doesn’t exactly satisfy my niche craving for a game featuring an amoeba as the protagonist.

All of these titles are now available through either the 3DS eShop, DSi Shop, or the Wii’s Virtual Console.

Looks like a bike version of Pole Position or Rad Racer.
