Preliminary Ruling: Xbox 360 Infringes on Motorola Patents
An administrative law judge made a preliminary ruling today that states Microsoft´s Xbox 360 infringes on patents held by Motorola. The final ruling does not take place until later in the year, but if the final ruling matches this one Microsoft may be paying hefty licensing fees to continue making the Xbox 360. However, Microsoft feels confident they may still win in the end.
“We remain confident the Commission will ultimately rule in Microsoft´s favor in this case and that Motorola will be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms.”
Many times paying fees are all that is required to get out of the legal situation. Regardless, this will be an interesting case to follow in the coming months for sure.
