Was Lollipop Chainsaw inspired by Avril Lavigne?

At first you may think this is a late April Fool’s, but rest assured – it’s not. Although I’m not implying anything, it wouldn’t necessarily be the first time that someone/something was inspired by someone/something else. In some cases, we could even talk about direct copying that can, potentially, result in a lawsuit. Not saying it’s the same with Lollipop Chainsaw, the anticipated hack’n’slash zombie title, but who knows… right? Anyhow, here’s the deal:

Right off the bat I have to say that I don’t listen to Avril Lavigne that much. I do check out her songs every now and then, and even enjoy listening to some, but I wouldn’t call myself a die-hard fan. Nevertheless, something recently caught my eye. I was watching music videos on TV several days ago – yes, people still do that – and all of a sudden there was this clip playing. It sounded familiar, so I turned up the volume and watched. Moments later I noticed it was by Avril Lavigne. There wouldn’t be anything odd about that, except that I started noticing certain things that I knew I’ve seen before. But where? That was the ultimate question.

Suddenly I realized it and was a bit surprised to say the least – Lollipop Chainsaw! Although I was a bit skeptical at first, certain parts of the video simply stood out. I’m talking about the clip to “Girlfriend”, by the way, which was released 5 years ago – in 2007.

Maybe by now it is obvious which parts of the music video I find strikingly similar to Lollipop Chainsaw and its main protagonist – Juliet. OK, Avril’s dress may not be an exact duplicate, but I’d say it comes close. Plus, both girls are blonde and like to party. And yes, the clip even features  a beloved guy – a.k.a “boyfriend” – as well! Avril’s alter-egos fight over him. Juliet, on the other hand, has her boyfriend with her all the time. Well, his head to be precise. As for the hearts with a skull featured throughout the video, they look so sweet and deadly at the same time – just like Juliet. She can be rebellious and tough, like Avril, but can be an angel as well. The only difference here are the instruments these girls use. While Avril enjoys playing the guitar, Juliet tends to be more lethal and usually goes with a chainsaw when given the chance.

Though I think it’s just  a coincidence, it’s an interesting one to say the least. Or maybe it’s just me and I’m looking into it way too much. I’ll leave the final verdict up to you, after watching Avril’s video linked below.

Oh, and just a reminder – Lollipop Chainsaw hits stores on June 12th. Just so you know…
