Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two Partners Mickey and Oswald This Fall on Playstation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360

by on March 23, 2012

Disney’s Epic Mickey carried with it a lot of expectations when it launched in the fall of 2010; after all, it would be difficult for a game not to carry the heavy burden of anticipation when it is helmed by such visionaries as Warren Spector, a prominent designer responsible for such steam-punk classics as Deus Ex and System Shock. That said, Epic Mickey was somewhat of a disappointment, a sad realization that lead many to believe Spector’s initial efforts in the Disney universe to be his last. There was little merit to that belief, though, as Disney Interactive Media Group has officially announced that Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit will be returning to Wasteland this year in Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.

When last we left our heroes, Mickey and Oswald were in staunch opposition of one another; this year, the two will be joining forces to take on the dangers of Wasteland with their own unique set of abilities. Mickey will be reprising his role as lead character with his magical paintbrush, a tool that puts the powers of paint and thinner at his disposal, while Oswald will be helping to tackle obstacles with a remote control which allows him control over electricity. The practice held in mind while supporting this cooperative style of play is known as PlayStyle Matters, an idea pioneered by Warren Spector that encourages players to approach the game from a variety of different perspectives while taking into account the consequences and rewards of their actions.

There is much more than just a new multiplayer element working in Epic Mickey 2’s favor; in a first for the industry, Disney’s latest adventure will be a musical. The game’s narrative will play out in song as beloved Disney characters express themselves in a manner most commonly seen on Broadway, in Glee, or Smash, the hit NBC show that totally isn’t Glee. Such a bold pursuit seems like a simple decision when you consider the fact that the game will be voiced by a collection of top vocal talent that includes the first-ever actor to be orating the role of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a traditionally silent character in Disney lore.

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two will mark the franchise’s return to the Wii and its debut on the high-definition Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 home consoles. The Playstation 3 edition of the game will included an alternate set of controls for the Playstation Move series of accessories. All versions of Epic Mickey 2 will launch at an unspecified time this fall.
