Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Multiplayer Preview

Earlier this month in San Francisco, we had the opportunity to drop in with Capcom and Slant Six Games to test out some multiplayer action for the upcoming Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City for the Xbox 360 and PS3 (also coming to PC).

The four mutliplayer modes that we tried out were Heroes, Survivors, Biohazard and Team Attack.  In Heroes, gamers will get to play as popular Resident Evil characters such as Jill Valentine, Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Ada Wong and Nicholai Ginovaef.  Before stepping into battle though, players will need to select one of six classes such as Medic, Demolition, Stealth and more. In the mode, players will play as either a hero or a villain from the Umbrella side of things in a 4v4 match.  The purpose is to try and kill off the opposing team’s heroes/villains, though opponents can respawn but as a regular civilian. This can become challenging as the heroes/villains are heavily powered so if you’re one of the unlucky ones who comes back as a regular person, you’ll likely take plenty of damage and be required to unload as much as you can.  Once all the heroes or villains are killed on one team, the opposing team emerges victorious.  This mode was pretty entertaining and rather frantic, and I imagine this may be one of the more favorite modes.

We also had the chance to check out Biohazard, which sounds fancy but was simply a game of capture the flag; with the flags being replaced by G-virus vials.  Survivors, was another multiplayer mode that we tried out, which had teams of four facing each other off as well as zombies until an extraction helicopter arrived.  The side that got their entire team into the chopper emerged victorious, and alive.  During the demo, there were a few times were even opposing teams were having to team up momentarily to take the fight to the “bio-organic weapons (aka zombies), which added another dimension to the game.  It was also possible to become infected, which limited your ability to do much of anything until you found and sprayed yourself with some anti-virus. (There was also a Team Attack mode which was deathmatch, to put it simply.)

After about an hour or so of gameplay, it was pretty clear that the game mimics a lot of what is found in something like Left 4 Dead, though I’d say it’s not as frantic as the two L4D titles.  It is nice however, to have the backdrop of the Resident Evil universe as it adds a little je ne sais quoi to the experience and having to fight off an opposing team as well as bio-organic weapons is a nice touch.  With a few weeks left before its release, I would however, like to see the A.I. get a little upgrade as at times, the zombies were a bit too ‘lost’ on what to do or when to attack.  Additionally, melee attacks, which were fun to perform, were a tad too powerful for their own good.  It’s like, why shoot anything when you can just put a beatdown on an enemy?

Those issues aside, Capcom may have something here with Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, it’s an altering take on the third-person co-op, but will need to execute it properly to make a splash.

The game is set for a March 20 release.
