Epic Games Opposes SOPA in its Current Form
Add Epic Games, makers of the Gears of War series, to the list of companies that oppose the Stop Online Piracy Act–though they aren’t against the idea of stopping piracy. They’re concerned about preserving free speech, which is why they are only opposing SOPA in its current form.
According to Epic’s Dana Cowley, “”Some people have asked how Epic feels about the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)…Epic Games supports efforts that would stop overseas websites profiting from pirating our games, but we have to do that in a way that’s compatible with freedom of speech and due process of law. Thus, we do not support the current version of SOPA. We are members of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a trade organization that is working with legislators to refine the bill.”
We’re glad you oppose it currently, Epic, but we’d like for you to help destroy it not fix it. The bill is a giant pile of civil liberty violations. Let’s not try to work with it from that as the starting point. Time to start over on it.
