CTIA and ESRB Announce Rating System for Mobile Apps

CTIA and the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) today announced plans to introduce a new ratings system for mobile apps, that will be supported by six mobile storefronts upon it’s availability.

The ESRB will use the same age rating icons that have been popping up on video games for the last few years, including information about the apps’ content.

AT&T, Sprint, Microsoft, T-Mobile USA, Verizon and U.S. Cellular are all joining up to include the rating system in their app stores, and each provider will announce separately when the new system will be available for their customers.

After developers submit their applications to a particular storefront, they will then have to complete a questionnaire about their product, followed by an assigned, age-appropriate rating.

Parents rejoice.
