EA has announced as of today that their direct-to-consumer distribution platform Origin will play host to third party games. Included in the bunch that will be providing games on Origin, or as many gamers call it: “Not Steam,” will be Warner Bros. Interactive, THQ, and Capcom.
Starting in November, games from these third party providers will be made available on EA’s platform. This means Saints Row The Third, Batman: Arkham City, and whatever it is Capcom does now will be ready for download straight to the PC. It’s the first real step Origin is making to compete with Steam on anything that isn’t EA’s own games. We’ll have to wait and see how it works out, but one would imagine it will be hard to cut into Steam’s share of the market with much less selection. This could be the start of a little rivalry in the direct-to-consumer world.
