Uncharted 3: Play It First event report
Last night Blake and I headed to a local movie theater here in San Francisco to check out Uncharted 3 in 3D. We were shown the new launch trailer, two segments of single-player in 3D and I also participated in the multiplayer tournament.
After seeing much of the gameplay in 3D and then getting my hands on the game again in 2D, I am still a fan of keeping Uncharted simple. The 3D looked good, but definitely not great. The 3D made some areas look boxy and caused a lot of things in the background to start aliasing. The game’s vistas and even the normal detail to building textures look much better in 2D rather than 3D. With that being said, I don’t think Uncharted 3 is a game that benefits from 3D and I will definitely be keeping that feature turned off.
The gameplay looks great and I adore how the characters have seemed to age slightly. The new locations that they showed us look just as impressive as I would have expected from Naughty Dog. The most impressive was the cruise ship level in which the boat is taking on water and being tossed around by giant waves mercilessly all in real time by a progressively made ocean.
The multiplayer was a lot of fun, even though my team didn’t make it to the finals. Last year, I was on the winning team, this year my team (Team Chloe) made it through the first round but broke down later in the night and didn’t make it all the way. Even though we didn’t take home the grand prize, my team did it’s best and it was an honor to play with those guys. We did, however, all walk home a proud new owner of Uncharted 3, but won’t be getting them until next week. We were also fed very well, as well as raiding the concessions stand can feed you, and we were given a bag of goodies as we left.
I also had the chance to interview a developer and an environment artist from Naughty Dog, those interviews will be up here on GotGame soon. It was awesome getting to chat with these guys on and off camera. Their work brings me so much happiness and enjoyment.
Overall, the event was a totally awesome time, as it usually always is with Naughty Dog. I look forward to the next.
