In 1986 Namco released Rolling Thunder and distributed it through Atari. Rolling Thunder is a side scrolling shooter set in the dangerous world of espionage. Rolling Thunder uses the tried and true formula of the “save the damsel” scheme in a enjoyable way. Rescuing your kidnapped partner from an evil terrorist group that is led by Maboo, its alien-like leader.
With its colorful comic book style graphics and its catchy spy music, Rolling Thunder went on to port to many home systems like the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore Amiga and NES. A Rolling Thunder 2 game out in arcades in 1990 and Rolling Thunder 3 was a Genesis exclusive.
The Sega arcade game Shinobi has be credited as being a Rolling Thunder clone set in a Ninja world.
