No more DLC for Mortal Kombat. My goodness!

by on October 1, 2011

Mortal Kombat is a hit. Selling already over 3 million copies, there’s no doubt about it. Fan reception has been mostly positive and reviewers agreed. Before the game came out, Ed Boon has numerously mentioned they want to be “strong and aggressive” with DLC (downloadable content). To a certain degree Netherrealm Studios have delivered what they promised. Four additional characters have been released – Skarlet (MK2 glitch), Kenshi (Deadly Alliance), Rain (UMK3) and Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm Street). Although some fans have been slightly upset by the pricing, $4.99 per character, the general reception was very good and the DLC was a success. Even Boon himself, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, was pleased with the numbers and feedback, stating:

DLC for MK9 was huge! Certainly better than I expected! Hope you can understand we’re not allowed 2 share actual numbers. But it was BIG! From the beginning we always planned to release 4 characters. We wanted NEW, RETURNING and an unexpected one for the last.

However, no more DLC is currently planned. Eventhough the fans are still hungry to get some…

Again, I hate to use the word never. But we are currently not working on additional DLC for MK.

Later on he also answered some specific fan questions regarding DLC…

Will there be a Klassic Skins Pack Number 2? Sadly the reply was: “Probably not.”

When asked about ‘Friendship’ DLC, Ed replied: “Babality & Toasty was enough humor in MK9. Dont u think?”

As for additional chapters of Story Mode as DLC: “That wudda been kool. Expensive but kool.”

I tried to verify with Hans Lo, Senior Producer at Netherrealm, wheter this truly is the case or not and got the following reply: “If Ed says no, then it’s no.”

Carlos Pesina, also from Netherrealm, hinted they were mocapping, but Hans explained it doesn’t have to be strictly related to Mortal Kombat: “Just to be clear, our mocap studio isn’t used just by us. It’s a resource for all of WB Games. We’re one big happy family.”

So there you have it. This is it. Fin. Nada. Por que? You can ask the team on Twitter yourself. I personally do want more. At least give us the Portal Stage from previous games. It’s iconic!

In any case, a new patch for both consoles has come out… so that will have to do. For now…

As for the lovely folks in the Netherrealm… chances are they have already started working on their next game. Which might be another Mortal Kombat game, but nobody really knows for sure. It could be an adventure game, like Shaolin Monks. With Sub-Zero and Scorpion perhaps? Or a real-time strategy. Or it doesn’t have to be MK related at all. Rest assured though, it’s higly probable that a new game will come out around the same time the new Mortal Kombat movie will hit theaters – around 2013. Stay tuned and get over here!
