Netflix to Launch Qwikster, Offer Game Rentals

Netflix is breaking their DVD-by-mail service off of their current Netflix service will focus solely on streaming content. The new by-mail company will be called “Qwikster” and will add the option to also receive  Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 games for an additional fee, a la the blu-ray service cost.

Qwikster will be its very own entity, completely separate of Netflix. As such, accounts will be separate as well. So if you’re looking to grab some DVDs or games, you’ll be dealing with Qwikster now and not Netflix. The company will also take on its own CEO, ex-Netflix executive Andy Rendich.

Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings gave this information and plenty more on his blog. He also took the time to explain and apologize for the fiasco with the DVD service price increase a few months ago. It’s definitely worth a read, and it’s great to see a company realize when it’s done something wrong and try to fix it. Watch out for the iconic red envelopes of Netflix to appear on your doorstep with a Qwikster logo on it and your favorite new game in it within the next few weeks.
