2K Czech Developers Laid Off

by on September 1, 2011

In another blow to game developers worldwide 2K Czech, the developers of Mafia 2 and Top Spin 4, have laid off between 20-25 percent of their workforce. They announced cuts from their 200 person staff of up to 40 people from their Brno office and 10 from their Prague office.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise as the 2K Czech branch is responsible for some extremely popular and successful games, but according to the official word out of the studio it “has realigned its resources to streamline the development process, reduce costs and maximize studio performance.”

In the state the world economy is in, efficiency is key and throughout the entertainment industry we’re seeing cutbacks on the size of projects. Rooms are getting smaller, fewer developers are involved, and the process is being streamlined. Hopefully that just means we’ll see more great games popping up more often, and any of the devs that were at 2K Czech are more than talented enough to pick up new jobs or put out some great indie titles on their own. Speaking of, if any of you guys that got laid off see this, I’ve got a great concept for a game about a three-legged cat with laser vision. Get ahold of me.
