Longtime game makers Square Enix appear to be making some changes. A small gang of netizens and Redditers did a bit of delving and found copyrights submitted for the name Square, thus indicating a move to drop the Enix part of their name.
It’s been nigh on eight years since Square Co. and Enix merged into the chimaera-like being Square Enix, and about two years since their acquisition of UK publisher Eidos. Considering the company also own Taito, the name change could be the final move to making the Square brand a family under the original umbrella to distance the company from its assets.
Until the move is finalized, all we can do is theorize the meaning of this change. Don’t put too much stock into a reason yet, as no official word from Square Enix has come yet.
