Sony has today deployed a new firmware update for the PlayStation 3 that adds a host of new features and upgrades to the console.

The update will now include the ability to auto-update two existing features, with Automatic Download being renamed Automatic Update.  Gamers will now be able to automatically back up and upload saved game data, while Trophies will now be automatically synced at the timing of the Auto Download.

A new recommendation function will also be added that enables gamers to share recommendations for PS Store items with PlayStation Network friends, with the added ability to send messages with links to those specific product pages in the PS Store.

There will also be a new category in the XMB called TV/Video Services, which will host video apps such as Netflix, Hulu PLUS, and VUDU.  Users will be able to find and download videos directly from the XMB, with the addition of a new My Channels folder for access to downloaded apps.

Users will also see updates for Blu-ray 3D movie playback on the PS3:

  • 3D support will now be available when accessing Java-based special features on Blu-Ray
  • DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR decoding/bit stream output (or lossless audio) will be supported while playing Blu-ray 3D movies.
  • 3D digital photos in MPO format can now be viewed in 3D on the XMB and in the Photo Gallery app.
