Germany has a tendency to cram together too many nouns and censor the weirdest things. Thanks to a government agency in Deutschland called The Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons, violent or sexual images, books, movies, and games go through a rigorous indexing to determine their harm to the Germanic youth. Like the ESRB on steroids, this organization has been caught censoring things as a casual practice – a move drawing criticisms that they make it harder for everyone to access the material, especially the responsible adults who want to shoot the heads off of their enemies and run through the Hot Coffee mod all day.
While the Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien has previously indexed the Gears of War series to the point of an outright ban, this is not the case for Gears of War 3. Although reported as a game with potentially harmful images for das Kinder, the folks over at Eurogamer’s German division confirmed today that the game will be completely uncut. This lack of censorship breaks a mold and possibly hints at the government of Germany finally understanding that mature games can exist peacefully with under-18s.
So while hardcore pornography can continue to be exported with nary a hitch, only now can the importing of violent games begin. Good job, Germany. Keep up the good work.
