Update: Final Fantasy Theatrhythm
So last week we heard that there was a brand new Final Fantasy title coming to the Nintendo 3DS…but it was Final Fantasy Theatrhythm, a music-based game with chibi-style art in which you tap the stylus to defeat your enemies. The announcement came from an ad in the Japanese periodical Shonen Jump, a manga aggregate marketed to kids (though there are plenty of adult Narutards out there and that’s just fine).
We still don’t know when or if this game will make its way over to the United States, but a website for it just went up (all in Japanese unfortunately) from which some more details have surfaced. The story, in the tradition of many Final Fantasy titles, is ridiculous; the world’s music crystal (the center of all musical energy) is going haywire and must be saved by the favorite protagonists of the past games. Players will be able to choose a party of four characters to adventure through the world, engage in music-based combat, and level up-just like any other RPG. Among the musical selections players will…accompany, are many songs recognizable from past FF titles.
I still think this is a weird idea, but it already sounds better than Wii music; there’s at least some kind of story, a world to explore, and characters to level up.
