Reports coming out of Sony indicate a price drop for the PlayStation 3 will be coming this summer. The announcement is expected to come at Gamescom in August, around the same time frame the last major price drop on the system was announced back in 2009. This rumor comes on the back of Nintendo lowering the price of the Wii $50 to $149.99.
According to some sources, the price could drop as low as £179.99 GBP ($287 US). The price is expected to go lower in US markets, touching the $200-$250 range. Microsoft is expected to stay competitive with the other major competitors dropping their prices but had no comment on the situation.
Nintendo’s price drop came after the announcement of the Wii U but with no mention from Sony of the Playstation 4, this is expected to simply be an attempt to keep competitive in the current generation market. Despite the lack of any evidence, here is an artist’s depiction of the Playstation 4 :
