The online co-operative adventure game Journey will enter its limited, closed beta on Thursday, June 27. The game’s maker, Thatgamecompany, has announced the beta will run from June 27 to July 12, and invitations appear to be tough to come by.
Gamers who were a part of the early versions of other Thatgamecompany games may find themselves invited to the beta as a reward for their loyalty. Other beta codes have been scattered about to media outlets, while others will be released by Thatgamecompany on their Facebook page so keep an eye out for your chance to play.
What is known about Journey thus far is somewhat limited, though it appears to be taking a unique approach to a more traditional model of game. While it will be an adventure platformer at its core, the co-op part of the experience will feature no matchmaking, lobbies or chat; rather a player will run into another adventurer one at a time and will be expected to form a cohesive team with no form of communication aside from one another’s actions.
Journey is the fourth production to come out of Thatgamecompany’s unique vault of games. Its predecessors, Flower, Fl0w, and Cloud, all gained notoriety for their simplistic yet gripping functionality and stunning visuals. Journey is Thatgamecompany’s first foray into a more standard genre, though they have definitely brought their signature style and clever spin to the adventure.
