Updated:Diablo III Beta August 1st

by on June 23, 2011

Blizzard has a reputation for perfection and polished games, but that shine comes at a high price. Coming out over a decade after its predecessor and now three years after its announcement at the Blizzard Invitational in Paris, anticipation in the PC gaming community remains as high ever, but the fantasy juggernaut has maintained a mysterious silence of late concerning its Diabolic project. But finally some of the waiting pains are alleviated with some news; the Diablo 3 Beta is coming soon. Very soon. How soon? We’ll either have it or know when we will by August 1st of this year. We hope.

Here’s how the information leaked. Blizzard is holding an exclusive conference on Diablo 3 at their headquarters in Irvine, California in July. All the information is contractually secret until August 1st. This means big news for D3 either on August 1st or shortly after, and that news is more than likely the announcement of the beta, which Blizzard promised us would be expanded around the end of the year. It’s good to know that Diablo 3 is moving along on schedule, and keep your eyes open August 1st for the Beta!

Edit: It will most likely be a closed beta, not open. The article has been edited to reflect this.

Lets start with the fact that you popped up number 1 on Google news when I searched “Diablo 3”, as I do every night. You need to correct this article…. anywhere you’ve said the word “OPEN” beta, you mean “CLOSED” beta. Fix it.

    1) Open beta will not start before CLOSED beta starts. Right now, its not even in CLOSED beta. The game, in this moment, is in family & friends Alpha testing. The next phase of testing will be the CLOSED beta test…

    2) The CLOSED beta has yet to be officially announced and is purely in speculation mode. The reason why you’ve been hearing August 1st for “some sort of announcement” is because that is when the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) is lifted for the touring fansites that Blizzard has invited to their HQ. It is assumed that when the NDA is lifted is when they will make a formal announcement for the start of CLOSED beta.

    3) There is no telling how long CLOSED beta will last. If you know anything about Blizzard (not meaning to chastise you here), they have obscenely long play-test periods during beta.

    4) Open beta will be the last phase of testing — there are rumors that state that they will skip the Open beta test all together and just give advance early start play time to preorders, but again this is just another speculation from other forums.
