Say Goodbye To GameCube Support

If you were hoping to play your GameCube collection on your Wii U, I have some bad news for you.

Patrick Klepek from Giant Bomb discovered during an interview today with Nintendo’s Mark Franklin, head of public relations, that the Wii U console will not support GameCube discs. You will be able to play this current generation of Wii games, but you are going to need to keep your original ‘Cube or Wii around to play Super Mario Sunshine or Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.

This news is a bit disappointing and unexpected in my opinion. I assumed that Wii support automatically included GameCube playback as well. We still don’t know if Virtual Console or WiiWare purchases will transfer over to the Wii U yet, so there might be plenty of incentive for you to keep your old Wii.

We will have more information about backwards compatibility as soon as we know more.
