Mario’s beloved Tanooki suit finally makes its triumphant return later this year.
During Nintendo’s E3 conference earlier today, Nintendo of America’s president Reggie Fils-Amie took the stage to showcase Super Mario 3D. The Nintendo 3DS platformer was announced earlier this year at GDC, but today was the first real peek at the game.
Super Mario 3D looks incredibly similar to the Wii’s Super Mario Galaxy offerings in both style and gameplay, featuring full three-dimensional exploration and puzzle-solving. The trailer shown at E3 was short and didn’t reveal much, though it did highlight a few things that will make their debut in a 3D Mario game.
The Tanooki suit, which completely covers Mario and makes him resemble a racoon, will finally return since its initial appearance way back in Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES. Also making their third-dimension debut are the lovable Koopa Kids, again from Mario 3. Iggy Koopa and the gang were enemies in New Super Mario Bros. Wii in 2009, but this will mark the first time players will do battle with the Kids on a 3D plane.
No firm release date was given, but Nintendo claimed that Super Mario 3D will hit store shelves by the end of this year. A holiday release is almost certain, but we will update you as soon as we know.
