Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number was announced today with a teaser trailer that showed glimpses of the game in action.

Following on from the original game, released to rave reviews in 2012, the sequel keeps the unique visuals and violent action. Again you’re forced to question the lines between what is real and what isn’t – a question the teaser seems to allude to. This was one of the major revelations of the first game and looks set to continue here.

The game is being developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital and looks set to push on from the success of the original. With another bold soundtrack and simple controls the game could be set to win over another legion of fans. The original managed to combine retro graphics with a pleasingly sophisticated story line and the sequel looks set to promise more of the same.

The game is due for release this year on PC, Mac and Linux.

While there was a lot to look at with Nintendo’s classic franchises on the Wii U, some new challengers approached for the first eighth-gen console, and I was also able to get a little bit of hands-on time with two of them, The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2.

The Wonderful 101 is a superhero game for the ambitious – you control 101 of them. The Wonderful 101 is a new venture from Platinum Games, which has worked on games such as Viewtiful Joe (as Clover Studio, now controlled by Capcom), Madworld, and the original Bayonetta. And artistically, 101 looks like a spiritual successor to Viewtiful Joe. Unfortunately the similarities end there.

Originally slated to be in the Wii U’s launch window, The Wonderful 101 puts you in the role of Wonder-Red, leader to a group of superheroes known as the Wonderful 100 (with you, of course, being the 101st). These superheroes fight crime and save the day in Blossom City by morphing into objects such as a laser sword, a giant fist, or a pistol in order to stop the oncoming alien invasion. This is done via the Wii U Gamepad. Only a short demo was available for play at the time.

I’m not sure the delay helped the game at all. The Wonderful 101 was one of the few games I walked away from feeling like, “Oh. That wasn’t really that good of a game.” It’s possible that I just didn’t really have enough time with it – E3 previews can be rushed – but I just didn’t enjoy it. The gameplay of having to move your group of superheroes, then using the Gamepad to form a shape or an item, felt clunky and forced. My demonstrator informed me that I could do the same thing using the Gamepad’s right stick, but then when I tried it, it wasn’t as effective as the touchscreen; focusing on the touchscreen though got me a face full of alien zap. Moving the group as a unit was difficult (which can be expected for a game of this nature). Again, it’s wholly possible I just didn’t give it enough of a chance, but this was the one flop Nintendo put forth.

Platinum Games’ other offering, Bayonetta 2, on the other hand, looks like a sure-fire winner. I didn’t have time for a hands-on chance with it but I did watch someone else’s demo, and the look and feel of the original has been seamlessly ported over to the Wii U. Though it hasn’t been rated by the ESRB yet, it assuredly will retain the M rating of the first game. The game can be played traditionally or via touchscreen controls, and will support Off-Screen play.

Nintendo also offered a slew of games for the portable 3DS system, and I had to get my hands on demo of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Zelda fans who do not own a 3DS, the time to buy one is now. Set in the Hyrule of A Link to the Past, the game feels like an updated version of the SNES classic, right down to the locations of places from the original; however it truly does feel like a new experience. I got to demo a dungeon level, where the orange posts make a return to be smacked with the Magic Hammer. Climbing on top of the big ones, however, launched Link up to the next level of the dungeon. I also got to test out the Merge ability, which turns Link into a 2D etching to move along walls. The new technique worked well, and I was quickly back to my Zelda ways, poking around for secrets when I should have been advancing in the dungeon. I also tried some of the tricks I tried in the SNES Zelda, and rediscovered my Spin slash with the sword, so it’s nice to see that make a return.

Before I left, I passed by a 3DS and saw Yoshi on it, so I had to make one more stop to check out Yoshi’s New Island. Though much wasn’t revealed in terms of storyline, the third installment plays like the first two, but features new mechanics such as the Mega Egg, which can be used to break down walls and reveal hidden items and doors. The Mega Egg utilizes the 3DS gyroscopic functionality for precision aiming. Yoshi’s flutter jump and ground pound make a return, as does the irrepressibly-adorable-until-he-cries Baby Mario.

This year’s E3, as has been the rumor for many years past, was supposed to be the final nail in the coffin for the Mario Machine. But if the turnouts spotted at the E3 booth are any indication, once again the rumors are simply false alarms.

Scheduled release dates for the above-mentioned games are as follows:

The Wonderful 101: September 15, 2013

Bayonetta 2: 2014

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds: November 2013

Yoshi’s New Island: 2014

Sony have pulled the latest firmware update for the PS3 after reports that it was making some users’ consoles unresponsive.

The update, 4.45, was designed to allow users to turn off the trophy notifications in game as well as some other unspecified modifications. However it seems that some consoles were becoming “bricked” as they would not even load up the XMB or respond to the power button being pressed.

Sony released an official statement saying, “We’re aware of reports that the recent PS3 update (4.45) has caused,”before adding, “we have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating.” However, as MCV noted, if the consoles will not respond then there is the added difficulty of being unable to sign into PSN to download the fix.

This news comes just as Sony are riding on a groundswell of popular support after their showing at E3. It seems unlikely that this will do much PR damage to the company, but it comes at an inconvenient time for them.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag will launch with the Xbox One and PayStation 4, according to Ubisoft Game Director Ashraf Ismail in an interview with ElderGeek.

The Xbox One will launch this November, and the PlayStation 4 will arrive sometime this holiday season.

The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U versions of the game will come out October 29. The PC version, however, will have to wait a few weeks, Ismail said.

“We’re working hard on the PC version,” he said. “It’s one of the main platforms we work on in the office. For our PC fans, don’t worry. The game on PC looks phenomenal.”

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. In the past, the PC versions of the Assassin’s Creed games have launched later than the console versions.

Siliconera informed us today that the newest entry in the Dragon Ball Z fighting game franchise will be the first to feature eight player battle royales.

The game, being developed by Namco Bandai, does not currently have many details released about it as of yet. We have learned, however, that Dragon Ball: Battle of Z will include an eight player battle royale as one of the game’s key features.

We have also learned that the game will have four player co-op, and will support online multiplayer. With these details, it is easy to see how an eight player mode would work in a fighting game like this.

The game is set to be released for the PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, though no official release date has been announced as of yet.

Will Goku and his friends be able to bring an interesting and fun fighting game to Vita, 360, and PS3? Or will they fall short of achieving greatness in this installment of the fighting franchise?

Gematsu reported today that an official PlayStation 4 digital brochure (supposedly handed out during E3) hints at online multiplayer for the upcoming inFAMOUS: Second Son.

The specific page in the brochure states that inFAMOUS: Second Son supports single player offline play, with “online players TBC.” It should be pointed out that the other pages for purely offline games do not include listings for online player count.

What does this mean? It seems to hint that the upcoming Second Son will be the first game in the inFAMOUS series to incliude online multiplayer.

It should, however, be noted that while the brochure seems to be hinting at this, there hae been no official announcements.

Will the hinted multiplayer prove to be true? If so, how, exactly, would multiplayer work in the upcoming inFAMOUS: Second Son? Does “TBC” stand for “To be counted” or something else entirely? Could the brochure be a fake or edited version?

Siliconera reported today that Square Enix recently registered the trademarks for both Occult Maiden and Star Ocean.

While it may be true that trademarks become renewed all the time, Siliconera points out that Square Enix typically only does so right before they utilize said trademark. They even provide an example in the form of Drag-on Dragoon (for those unaware, this is Drakengard’s Japanese title). Square Enix renewed the Drag-on Dragoon trademark earlier this year, then quickly announced Drakengard 3.

With these trademark renewals, Star Ocean fans are wondering how, exactly, they will continue the Star Ocean universe after the plot twist of Till the End of Time. People are also wondering how the upcoming Occult Maiden will turn out, and even what it will become.

Will a new Star Ocean prequel be announced? What will Occult Maiden be, exactly? What new (or old) tricks does Square Enix have in store for the upcoming games?

According to NeoGAF (via an article on GenGame today), GameStop is no longer accepting pre-orders for the Xbox One following E3.

This may come as a surprise, as (as far as I know, anyway. Feel free to correct me if I’m mistaken!) they have not stopped taking pre-orders for a major console before. The Xbox One seems to be a series of firsts… no used games, always online, and now no more pre-orders through GameStop.

The article states, “As of this morning, GameStop management has confirmed that they are not currently taking reserves on Xbox One. No official explanation has been given for the removal of the SKU at this time, and GameStop has not clarified whether or not they will re-open the reserve list at a later time. PlayStation 4 is still available for reserve, and Sony recently announced that GameStop has pledged to buy every PlayStation 4 they can get their hands on.”

There is one thing to note, however. If you go to the GameStop website, you can indeed still place a pre-order for the Xbox One. I tried to add several versions to the cart, and while some did not add (there was no error message or anything, it just took me to an empty cart), others did.

Will the stores start taking pre-orders again? Will this give Sony even more of an advantage?

According to IGN, Nintendo is planning on making Steel Diver a free-to-play game for the Wii U.

The original game first appeared as a Nintendo 3DS launch title and Shigeru Miyamoto told the outlet at E3 that the company will be using the IP with a F2P model.

“There is something we’re doing with the Steel Diver idea that I think is going to open things up with that game… It’s going to be very fun. We’re exploring from a perspective of where we can take that from a multiplayer standpoint – it’s going to have this four-player battle mode that I think is going to be very interesting,” Miyamoto said.

Miyamoto added that the concept of the game was still being decided but that it could end up including either some form of membership or micro-transaction type fee for additional content.

“It’s something that we’re hoping to be able to show relatively soon,” Miyamoto stated.

Eurogamer reported today that the Android gaming console known as GameStick was pushed back to a mid-August release.

The reason? According to the GameStick team, it was pushed back so that they could accomodate those Kickstarter backers that pledged $300 (or more). These backers got to have their say on the devices user interface. Unfortunately, the team has said that the review units took longer to get out than initally thought, so these backers have not been able to give their feedback as of yet.

Said the team, “We appreciate that this will frustrate backers keen to get their hands on their device but we did not feel it was fair to bypass this step as it was a key pledge and the feedback will be really welcome. We now expect to ship product from China during early August and expect it to be with you by the middle of the month, prior to units launching in retail.”

Will the current release window be accurate? Or will something cause GameStick to be delayed again?

2K Games today revealed DLC plans for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, which is currently set to release on Aug. 20 for the PS3, PC and Xbox 360.

Those that pre-order the game will get access to the “Codebreakers” bonus mission, as well as the Light Plasma Pistol.

According to the publisher, the post-launch DLC will be exclusive to 360 owners but has not divulged the information on that content yet.

“We take great pride in our track record of providing high-quality post-release content for our games,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “We will continue to expand the XCOM universe by telling original stories set in the paranoia-drenched Cold War era of The Bureau.”

“The alternate 1962 universe that we’ve created for The Bureau is vast and there are many more stories to tell about the early days of XCOM,” said Morgan Gray, development director at 2K Marin. “We’re excited that our stories will provide a new perspective on the war effort, much like how our critically acclaimed Minvera’s Den DLC for BioShock 2 allowed us to present a unique perspective of Rapture.”

Though Sakuari (Sora LTD) has stated, that MegaMan may be, the only new 3rd party fighter for Super Smash Bros on Wii U & 3DS. Which is odd, because Namco is helping develop the 4th entry…

Super Mario 3D World – Features 4 Player Action and the ability to turn Mario into a Cat! Also the camera moves around, like in Super Mario 64.

Mario Kart 8 coming in 2014! The new Mario Kart Game will contain all of what made you fall in love with the Kart Racing series. The Bikes are back, plus snaking, gliding and underwater travel. New the series is being able to go upside down, using the gravity feature.

Retro Studios new project was NOT Metroid or even Starfox. DK and Diddy return with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Breeze. This time DK can pick up foes and Dixie joins the group. This game will feature Sea creatures as Vikings! It releases this FALL!

Monolith Soft showed a longer trailer for X (Xenoblade 2) during Nintendo’s E3 Direct, but didn’t have the game playable on the show floor. I am, very much looking forward to this game in 2014 or 2015.

Bayonetta 2 & Wonderful 101 getting multiplayer Wii U ONLY

Sonic Lost Worlds for the Wii U & 3DS. Combines elements from Sonic Extreme (canceled game) and Super Mario Galaxy. Sonic is able to use the Wisp powers again, but now can run up walls, among other new powers. More details as they release, but the game will be available on October 13th in North America.

Sadly, Wii U & 3DS will only have 14 Third Party Games this year. Due to low U sales and tons of 1st Party titles from Nintendo. Big 3rd Party titles releasing this Fall are Batman: Arkham Origins, Black Gate, Rayman Legends, Skylanders Swap Force etc etc
