Iwata claims that Nintendo must region lock due to “cultural acceptance and legal restrictions”
Today, MCV UK reported that Nintendo’s president Saturo Iwata made statements that points to Nintendo keeping the region lock on their systems.
Said Mr. Iwata, “From some people’s perspective, it might seem like a kind of restriction. However, we hope people can appreciate the fact that we’re selling our products worldwide.”
He continues to state, “There are many different regions around the world, and each region has its own cultural acceptance and legal restrictions, as well as different age ratings. There are always things that we’re required to do in each different region, which may go counter to the idea that players around the world want the freedom to play whatever they want.”
He ends with a simple plea. “I hope that game fans can understand that the industry isn’t doing this solely out of business ego. There are some reasons behind it.”
Although Mr. Iwata has made the aboe statements, it is noted that the interview took place before Microsoft pulled a 180 on their own policies.
Will Nintendo also be pulling a 180? Or will Iwata’s statements prove true, forcing them to keep the locks in place?
