In an interview with Digital Spy, Wreck-it-Ralph director Rich Moore was candid about not having Mario make it into the movie.

The rumor for Mario’s absence was that Nintendo did not want to license him, which Moore says isn’t true at all.

“Over the course of developing the story I was always looking for the perfect moment or scene to include Mario,” he said.

“But it had to be organic, it had to feel like [the scene] was made for him and unfortunately as we were developing the story and taking it to where it needed to go, that moment never made itself clear.”

While no sequel has actually been announced, Wreck-it-Ralph was a box office success, garnering $184,414,532 in domestic sales and $391,914,532 worldwide (on a budget of $165,000,000) as of Feb. 10, 2013.

Should a sequel come to fruition as most believe it will, Moore says he would make sure to create a scene that would make good use of Mario.

“If we’re lucky enough to have a sequel then we’ll create that moment that’s perfect for [Mario].”
