Wii U vs. PS3 vs. Xbox 360 Screenshot Showdown

We’ve been wondering for quite some time how Wii U’s graphics compare to current gen consoles.  With Nintendo’s new Nintendo Direct we have a look at new games developed from the ground up for the Wii U.  Now seems like a good time to check back in and see how the Wii U’s original efforts compare to other consoles.  I even threw in some Wii screenshots for good measure.  I’ll offer no commentary to sway your opinion one way or the other.  I’ll let the screens do the talking for themselves.

For the comparisons, I tried to pick out the games with the most comparable art style.  Only exclusive titles were chosen to show off games optimized for each console.  The Xbox 360 was mostly left out because it was hard to find recent titles that had comparable art styles to the games shown off today.

Well there you have it.  Clearly the Wii U is a tremendous leap from the Wii, and the Wii U’s second wave of exclusives shows considerable improvement over titles like Scribblenauts Unlimited and Zombi U.  I’ll leave you to decide how the Wii U stacks up to current generation consoles.

WTF! Is this!? The only way you can compare a game across multiple platforms is a by comparing one that releases at the same time on all platforms.

You can’t compare ports that had more development time on the Wii U and you can’t compare Wii U exclusives to Sony or Microsoft exclusives, it’s just stupid.

As far as right now there is no real way to compare the graphics simply because there haven’t been any games for the Wii U that have released on other systems at the exact same time. When you have the same game, same development time and same release dates on PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii U compare away.. but until then save yourself the embarrassment and waste of time for people to even read this.

I mean literally this entire thing was pointless and a complete waste of time because the data just doesn’t match. I mean it’s like a science experiment you can’t compare something across the board when all the variables you want to compare with are different, you have to insure everything is exactly the same before you start trying to compare something.

Same could be said for photography, I can’t compare a photo that I had taken from several different angles in each shot, each shot has to be in exactly the same position as the rest, the lighting the same, the time of day the same and the camera the same along with all the settings ect.

I really didn’t get the point of making this article and calling it a showdown of all things. As if it’s the end all to whether or not the Wii U has the best graphics.

Call of Duty is consistently better on the X-Box 360. Is that because the 360 is a more powerful system? No, it’s because the game was designed with the X-Box 360 in mind. If you make a game for one platform and port it to others, 9 out of 10 times it’s going to look worse on the ported version, regardless of the power difference between the two systems. Even PC ports of console games often look terrible for this reason, so multiplatform games aren’t always the best thing to use for comparison.

Naturally, this method has its disadvantages as well, and I definitely recognize this. The point of this article was simple. The power of the Wii U compared to the PS3 is still in question. Now that we have some games that were a) not rushed and b) were made for the Wii U, we have a better idea of what the system is capable of. It’s not like I’m forcing people to decide here and now which is better. Only reason its called a showdown is because it sounds a bit catchier.

    You’re kidding right?
You even have a Halo 3 Screen shot in there as a Halo 4 shot…

You picked poor screens from Uncharted, honestly, this was pointless. The WiiU is finally on par with the 360 and PS3, now we’ll have HD games across all platforms, lets just play them all~

If you’re going to use Halo 4 shots, at least use good ones.

That slideshow of shots shows off the scale of Halo and the immense detail. The 2nd to last shot you used isn’t bad, but it’s too clean, which doesn’t show off the detail like those shots.

Even Halo 4 isn’t fair, because it’s far larger than Uncharted 3 and does much more, try Gears 3.

I know you down-voted me, so take a look at those screens at the bottom of the article, does everything Uncharted 3 does, except Halo 4 has 40+ enemies on screen, 4 player co-op, multiple vehicles and bigger levels as well as a larger skybox, meaning rendering is far harder.

Really not hard to get those graphics in Uncharted when you have no co-op, levels the size of a shed, a ton of scripted sequences and low-resolution alpha effects + explosions. BTW, 3 of your images are cutscenes, they aren’t in game, they’re rendered in the in-game engine but have up scaled textures and AA during cutscenes, that’s why Drake looks better in cutscenes than in real game-play, as well as there being fewer jaggies.

In cutscenes Halo 4 looks like this

    http://www.oxmonline.com/files/u49901/infinity_lasky_03-w.jpg

Whereas in-game, it looks like this:

    http://www.thereticule.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Halo-4-CTF-Exile-Map.jpg
    http://thecontrolleronline.com/wp/wp-content/gallery/halo-4-e3-2012-gallery/halo-4-e3-2012-screenshot-8.jpg
    http://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/stg.ign.com/2012/12/halo_inline4-610×343.jpg

Best-looking console game is Crysis 3 anyway, but Uncharted 3 hardly wins by a ”landslide”.
