As I was working on a column about video games that should be movies, one man in Aurora, Colorado ripped away the fun and fantasy of film, game, and other forms of entertainment that should be escapes from reality. It’s not video-game related, but some things are bigger than video games.
At a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, a single gunman in riot gear exploded tear gas in a theatre, then began shooting movie-goers with automatic weapons, including children. Current counts total 12 confirmed dead and dozens of others wounded. The Los Angeles Times reports that one suspect, 24 year-old James Holmes, is in custody currently. He had three weapons on him, and his car was allegedly packed with more guns and explosives.
The staff at GotGame.com sends our deepest emotion and wishes of good will to those who were struck, to those who lost, and to those who were simply there. Movies, like video games, are meant to be escapes, not places of pain and sorrow. We hope that like Bruce Wayne’s masked hero, the people of Aurora will rise above this.
